Expert`s area of expertise is on identification, modeling and simulation of complex structural mechanisms take place during the course of polymer processing operations. He is actively developing novel processes to address the needs of emerging markets. Towards this goal, his group recently developed a hybrid electrospinning/solution casting multipurpose processing platform to produce functional polymer films including conductive transparent films. He has just received a grant to fund the concept of functional polyimide films and high performance nanocomposites. This project focuses on commercialization of products including optical films for LCDs, high strength films for High Altitude Airship, high performance composites to replace jet engine parts and thermal management films for dissipating heat from electronic devices including plasma and liquid crystal television sets. He has had extensive experiences in wide range of polymer processing operations including fiber spinning, film casting (melt and solution), uni and biaxial stretching and heat treatment and real time measurement of complex phenomena during the processing operations. Towards this he developed real-time mechano-optical measurment systems where one can measure birefringence, true stress true strain during uni and biaxial stretching of films. Recently he developed a mechano-electro-optical system where electrical conductivity as well as above measurements are measured real time during stretching of polymer films. These are all designed to understand complex interplay between processing history and structure and properties of the multi-functional films.
