I have 16 years of experience, and specialize in the field of addictions with specific knowledge in the areas of behavioral addictions, gambling disorder and Internet addiction. I have published on such topics as causes (etiology) of disordered gambling, policy intiatives for responsible gambling and gambling-related criminal behavior. I became interested in behavioral addictions when I was a prosecutor. I saw individuals who had no prior trouble with the law headed to prison for embezzling large amounts of money they could never hope to repay. I was fascinated to learn how an individual could get addicted to a behavior versus a substance. I returned to university for a master’s degree and treated disordered gamblers as well as those with other behavioral addictions (sex, Internet, shopping, etc.). Research in those areas was in its infancy and I wanted to know more than was available so I obtained my Ph.D. to conduct my own research.
