Evaluating Your Computer Forensic Expert Witness

The use of computer forensic expert witnesses has increased dramatically. The folks over at the Computer Forensics Blog have posted a helpful article detailing what an attorney should look for in evaluating the credentials of such experts. Training and specific certifications are essential, and law enforcement experience is definitely a big plus. Additionally, a good expert will have a modern and fully-equipped laboratory dedicated specifically to forensic work. The article notes to be aware of any expert who also uses his or her lab to "surf the web" or to do their children's homework. Finally, a good forensic expert should also have experience working for both sides of a case.

Expert witness referral firms, in presenting a computer forensics expert, should already have these things in mind when making the referral.
